One оf the smallest but very beautiful countries in Southeastern Europe is Bulgaria. It had borders with Greece, Macedonia, Turkey, Romania, Serbia, & the Black Sea. Bulgaria has a rich history dating from 681 and, thus, many historic sites dating back from centuries. 

But nature is also extremely diverse - there is a sea, many rivers, lakes, forests, mountains, plains, etc. The culture and the other aspects of Bulgaria are also captivating for those interested in them. And although it is hard to choose just ten places that are worth visiting, we’ve compiled а list to help you see some of the best that Bulgaria has to offers. 

10. The Rila Monastery

Even if you aren’t religious, the Rila Monastery is certainly worth visiting because it is among the most significant and memorable monuments of the Bulgarian culture and one of the symbols of the country. 


The monastery is part of the UNESCO’s world heritage and has an aura of greatness, which can make your breath stop.

The Rila Monastery is situated in Rila Mountain, which is in the Southwestern part of Bulgaria. It has а status of the separate village and will show you beautiful architecture and captivating culture you’ll never forget.

9. The Seven Rila Lakes
And while yоu are in Rila, you can visit another amazing place the mountain has to offer but while the monastery is an anthropological culture heritage, the Seven Rila Lakes are а natural wonder which is as beautiful and magnificent as it is popular. This is 1 of the 100 national tourist sites.

This group of lakes is from glacial origin and consists of, as the name suggests, seven lakes called Sulzata (translation - The Tear), Okoto (translation - The Eye), Bubreka (translation - The Kidney), Bliznaka (translation - The Twin), Trilistnika (translation - The Trefoil); Ribnoto (translation - The Fish Lake) & Dolnoto (translation - The Lower Lake).


8. The Tsarevets fortress
Situated near Veliko Tarnovo, the Tsarevets fortress had been the main Bulgarian fortress in the period of the Second Bulgarian Empire (from 1185 to 1393) when the city of Veliko Tarnovo had been the Bulgarian capital.


It will show you the history of the Second Bulgarian Empire - both tragic and glorious.

The Tsarevets fortress will turn the time back to show you the ancient life of Bulgaria and you’ll find it difficult to resist to its greatness and charm. 


You may even have the change to see the unique spectacle with sound and light called “Zvuk i svetlina” (translation “Sound and light”) when the dramatic music, the diverse lights, lasers and church bells tell you the story of the Bulgarian past.



7. Sozopol
This destination is on the other end of the country at the coast of Black Sea. It is a sea resort descendant of the ancient Greek colony of Apolonia. 


Sozopol is one of the oldest cities of Bulgaria and has rich culture-historical past. Some of the architecture of 18th-19th century has been preserved until today and can show you a magnificent picture of the Bulgarian past. But it is not only a historical site.

Situated on the Black Sea coast, Sozopol is famous for its wonderful beaches and blue water and is one of the most popular resorts in the country. It also has many nightclubs, restaurants, hotels, cafes and interesting places to explore.

6. Nesebar
Another famous spot on the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria is Nesebar. It is also a sea resort with rich historical past and great culture. 


It is one of Europe’s most ancient cities, architectural and archaeological reserve and part of UNESCO’s list of cultural heritage.

With its magnificent architecture, rich history, wonderful culture, warm beaches and clean water, Nesebar is one of Bulgaria’s most visited sea resorts and is a great place not only for those who love the sea but also for all of you who love exploring the historical and the cultural past.

5. Perperikon
Perperikon is an ancient Thracian city now and archaeological complex situated in the Eastern part of the Rodopi Mountain. It contains a medieval fortress, monuments from the Antiquity period and an ancient sanctuary.

It had been a sacred saxatile city of the Thracians and, later, had been populated by Romans, Goths, Byzantines and Bulgarians. It was destroyed in the 14th century by the Turks and is now a historical and archaeological site visited by many tourists. 

It is a magnificent and glorious place to visit if you love exploring historical places.

4. Shipka Monument
Shipka is a pass in the mountain of Stara Planina in Bulgaria which is emblematic for the Bulgarian history and a very important part of the liberation of Bulgaria from the Ottoman Empire. In 1934 the Shipka Monument was open officially by Tsar Boris the Third. 


The monument is in the shape of a battle tower and its height is 31.5 meters. 

To get there you’ll have to climb 894 steps but this is certainly worth it because, once on the top, you can’t help but admire the beauty of the nature and the greatness of the history which have soaked in this place.

3. The Belogradchik Rocks
They are a group of conglomerate and sandstone rock formation with strange shapes. You can find the Belogradchik rocks in western Stara Planina (Balkan Mountains). 


You can see stunning rock formations, which are up to 200 meters high. The color of the formations varies from red to yellow. The Belogradchik rocks are a natural phenomenon and find a place as one of the top hundred national tourist sites of Bulgaria.

Beautiful and magnificent, the rocks will spark your imagination and captivate your mind with their glory.

2. The Devil’s Throat Cave

The Devil’s Throat Cave is a magnificent natural underground mystery that dates back from millenniums. Its greatest mystery is the underground river, which hasn’t been traced until this day. The cave is 1 kilometer long with the tourist route being 350 meters. According to the legend, Orpheus had come down in the Devil’s Throat Cave to search for his beloved Eurydice in the underworld of Hades.

1. Prohodna Cave (The eyes of God)
This beautiful cave is also known as the Eyes of God cave due to the two eyes-like holes in the middle chamber which illuminate the interior and provide a unique view. These holes are formed by the natural erosive forces. The cave shows evidences of prehistoric habitation but the purpose - ritual or domestic - of the site is not clear. This place is a heaven for all cave-lovers and for those of you who enjoy visiting natural wonders but is also famous for its bungee jumping opportunities.
