Are you a person who gets thrilled when seeing twins? Having twins as a relative or even as neighbors can be exciting and pretty much confusing too. Not sure if you are greeting Ethan or Evan. Now imagine, having a twin in almost every house, in the entire town. It will almost feel like you have hit your head and are seeing double. Funny is it not? Well, that's exactly what will be your experience if you visit these six popular towns, also dubbed the Twin Towns.

1. Igbo-Ora, a town in Oyo State, south-western Nigeria

Christened as the Twin Capital of the World, the town has only a few households without a set of twins. According to a study conducted by Patrick Nylander, a British gynecologist, there was an average birthrate of 45–50 set of twins per 1000 live births recorded between 1972 and 1982.

The reason attributed to this unusual twin birthrate is a morsel meal—Àmàlà and Ìlasà—a combination of yam powder and okra soup. Yams contain gonadotrophins, a chemical that helps women produce multiple eggs.

2. CandidoGodoi: The Land of Twins from Brazil

For a very long time, Josef Mengele, the Nazi physician known as the Angel of Death, and his sadistic experiments on women, were claimed to be the reason for unusually high twin birthrate of 10% in CandidoGodoi, compared to the mere 1.8% rate for the state of Rio Grande do Sul. However, the story seems to be nothing more than a myth.

This long-rumored story was due to the fact that this small southern Brazilian town is composed almost entirely of German or Polish immigrants, with many tracing ancestries to the Hunsrück region of Germany. Not to forget, the said Hunsrück region of Germany has a higher than average twinning rate.
But still, this municipality of 6,641 inhabitants with more than 700 twins, attributes to a specific gene in the population.

3. Kodinhi, India: Goes by the name "God's own Twins Village

A small village in the state of Kerala in India, with just 2,000 families, has over 400 set of twins officially registered. This high birthrate of twins is very uncommon, for a country like India, which has a very low twin birthrate. This is believed to be due to the certain elements present in either the water or the air in the Kodinhi area. Yet nothing has been proved scientifically.

The percentage has been increasing over the years, and the Kodinhi women married off to other places have also been known to give birth to twins.

4. VelikayaKopanya village in Ukraine

A village with less than 4,000 inhabitants has over 122 twins registered. The villagers believe that there is something special in the water. They even go on to quote a story of a woman, who was unable to have children, drove regularly from a town 95 miles away to this village to drink its water.

And as the story goes, within a few months, she got pregnant—with twins. However, Ukrainian scientists have just claimed the water to be very clean.

And it's not just that, as the miraculous water has even said to have created a twin boom among the cattle, bringing the village to a rate above the average birth of twin calves.

5. Buzim, Bosnia: Town of Twins
A local journalist and publicist NedžibVučelja discovered that during the war, from 1992 to 1995, at least 21 pairs of twins were born in this town. The figure is believed to be even higher as many residents left to escape the fighting and poverty. Locals claim the highest twin birth rate is likely due to traditions of large families or even inbred genes.

This particular village with just around 367 families has over 42 set of twins registered. The villagers believe that the twin springs located in the village to be the reason. The said spring had been reportedly named as the Twin Springs, only after the story started spreading.

This twin phenomenon has been extended to the village's chickens as they are claimed to be laying “Double Yolk Eggs.”
